On the Farm
Last week the EHO (enviromental health officer) came to check our premises on their annual visit. This includes the processing areas (white-room where we make ice-cream, yoghurt, cream etc. and the butchery.) and the farm shop. We’re very very pleased to tell you that from a hygiene rating of 4, we have now been upgraded to a 5! The highest score you can get!
Thomas and Will have also managed to cut some more grass for making silage, although it was raining at the time! This isn’t ideal for making good quality silage, but we’re running out of time as the summer will not last forever! The quality will not be as good due to the rain on the day and lack of sunshine. If the sun shines just before you cut the grass then the grass contains more sugars than if you cut if when it’s cloudy. So this silage will not give the cows as much energy as the previous time we made the silage. We’re now hoping the grass in the fields will grow at high speed to we can get another crop of silage before the end of the summer! Fingers crossed!
Will has also started harvesting the onions as some of the varieties are ready.
We’re now drying them on racks in the green house.
