On the Farm
The barley was ready for harvesting this week, so the contractors came with the combine harvester to get the grain in. The Barley will be part of the cows diet in winter.
The apples are also growing well. They will not be ready until September, but there seems to be quite a lot on the trees!
The tomatoes are also starting to change colour, so we might have them available next week.
No plums for this week, but the later variety of plums aren’t far off being ripe, so we will probably have them available again next week as well.
We’ve also made another batch of ice-cream.
With the vanilla ice-cream you might notice a slight difference in flavour. This is because we used different vanilla pods.
Normally we use premium bourbon vanilla pods grown in Madagascar, but there has been a worldwide shortage of these vanilla pods due to failure of the crops. Until now we’ve always managed to be able to source vanilla pods from Madagascar, but this time it seemed impossible.
I did some research and eventually chose to buy vanilla pods grown in India. You can buy vanilla from many different countries. They all taste different due to variations in climate, soil etc.
80% of vanilla used comes from Madagascar because it has the best flavour. The vanilla from India seems to be next best, so hopefully the ice-cream will be just as delicious as normal!
We’ve also changed the labels on the ice-cream in order to cut cost, since the cost of ingredients has gone up. The labelling might not look as good, but this way we can continue to produce a good quality ice-cream!
