On the Farm
We had quite a productive week on the farm!
We’ve had 1 field sown with oats, which will be part of our cows winter feed. The rest of the plants will be made into straw for bedding. This field has been under sown with grass, which means that when we harvest the oats, the grass will come up so we can let our cows graze the field again.
We also planted our potatoes in our new vegetable plot. We now have to start planting the other vegetables such as beetroots, brassicas, carrots, parsnips, turnips etc. Hopefully we’ll get some of that done next week.
It’s still a bit too cold at night to plant any tomato and cucumber plants out into the greenhouse, so for the time being they are staying inside away from frost.
We also let some calves outside for the first time. These were born at the end of last year, so they have never been outside in the fields as it would have been too cold for them. Needless to say they were very happy to get a big pasture to themselves!
It also saves us quite a bit of work as they don’t need to be fed and watered now they are outside. They just need a daily check to make sure they are doing well.
There are still 9 young calves up to 1 month old that are still kept inside for another month or so until the nights are warm enough for them. Then they will also go outside!
