On the farm
All the cows that were due to have a calf have given birth. All went well. All mothers and calves are doing fine. We’ve had 2 Jersey heifers (females) out of 5 calves. The other 3 calves are bulls, which we will keep for either veal or beef.
This week we’ve been making quite a bit of progress with the building work on our barn. The office is nearly finished which is great. Once finished we can start moving the paperwork out of our sitting room into the office, which will be fantastic after years of working from our sitting room.
The staff room is also nearly done. We can now all have lunch together in the staff room and at the same time be near the office and the shop area. Our kitchen then no longer needs to doubled up as a staff room.
Once the office and staff room are finished we’ll be starting on the shop area. We’ll concrete the floor to start with, which probably needs about a month to fully harden before we can do any more. We’re hoping to have the shop finished for Christmas, so fingers crossed everything will go to plan!
We’ve also been busy sorting out our cow housing for our milking cows. It will not be long before the cows will stay inside full-time as the grass is quickly getting shorter and soon there will be nothing left to eat.
We’ve been doing some repairs in the cow housing whilst the cows are outside and have been bedding up the cow beds with fresh sand ready for winter.
Most of our young-stock will stay outside for much longer. Weather depending some might stay outside all winter.
